Wilmington - Marie Louise Stephens Parks, 96, from Swannanoa, passed away November 12, 2012, in Wilmington, NC where she had lived for several years. She will be remembered for her spirit, her smile, and her love of life.
Born in Raleigh to Annie Maude and Hugh Stephens, she was the wife of the late James Houston Parks, former Swannanoa Postmaster. A 1933 graduate of New Hanover High School, Marie was "Miss Wilmington" that year. But in 1939, she visited Asheville and was so impressed with the Grove Arcade that she moved there to work. Throughout her life, she was greatly involved with the Swannanoa community and taught many children how to play the piano.
Marie will be greatly missed by her only child, Brenda Cheryl Parks Hughes and her husband, Tom Hughes, of Wilmington; her sister-in-law, Mary Frances Stephens, of Black Mountain, her namesake Marie Yarborough Cooper of Hendersonville, many nieces and nephews and her dog, Stevie.
Her parents; husband; three brothers, Victor, Hugh and Ozier Gray Stephens; and three sisters, Thelma Yarborough, Alice Stone and Ila Bomberger preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held at Harwood Funeral Home in Black Mountain Thursday, November 15, from 5 to 6 pm and a graveside service will be held Friday at 2:00 pm at Piney Grove Cemetery at the First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the church, or the animal rescue organization of your choice.
Arrangements are in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals, 828-669-2977.
