Roberta Stiles Lunsford

Marble - Roberta Stiles Lunsford, 85, of Marble died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at her residence. She was a native of Monroe County, TN, but grew up in Marble with her mother and father and five brothers.

Her father started teaching her Banjo at age six. Roberta started performing at school programs with her brother, Carl at the age of nine years old. Roberta had won several banjo contests. She performed at Berea, Kentucky's 22nd annual Celebration of Traditional Music. While in Kentucky, she taught a banjo workshop. She had performed at Cades Cove, TN Old Timers Day, Gold Festival at Coker Creek, TN, Old Timers Day in Brevard, NC, nursing homes, benefits, and the John C. Campbell Folk School concerts and festivals, including the Fall Festival for over 40 years. She also performed in The Reach of Song for nine seasons. What she liked most of all, though, was her churches.

She was a lifelong member of Vengeance Creek Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Christopher B. and Cansada Taylor Debty and the wife of the late Hubert G. Stiles, who died February 9, 1983.

Surviving are her husband, Furman C. Lunsford; three daughters, Charlece Sandidge and husband, Larry of Woodstock, GA, Debra Reynolds and husband, Larry of Marble, and Teresa Jenkins and husband, Marvin of Cumming, GA; four grandchildren, Keith and Alan Sandidge, Brychan Reynolds, and Ansley Jenkins; a special niece, Carol Dorris of Marietta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 28, 2013 in Vengeance Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Sandidge, S.J. Waters, and Glenn Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Derreberry Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Carlin Golden, Dustin and Cody Debty, Dustin Phillips, Richard Lunsford, and Mickey Maennle. Honorary pallbearers will be David Hyatt and Marvin Guffey.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 Friday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Roberta Stiles Lunsford to the John C. Campbell Folk School, 1 Folk School Road, Brasstown, NC 28902.
