MARION - Russell Quincey Burleson, 80, of Marion, passed away Friday, November 9, 2012 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was born July 14, 1932 and was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Burleson and Gwendolyn McKinney Burleson. An avid outdoorsman, Russell retired after serving as a wildlife officer with the State of North Carolina, where he oversaw the reintroduction of wild turkeys in North Carolina. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family and his faith in the Lord.
Mr. Burleson is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Mary S. Wiseman Burleson of the home; daughter, Janet Burleson Wiseman and her husband, Alan, of Spruce Pine; four step-children, Dale Wiseman and his wife, Gail, of New York, Susie Buchanan and her husband, Jeff, of Rutherfordton, David Wiseman and his wife, Mary, of Spruce Pine and James Wiseman and his wife, Audra, of Crossnore; seven siblings, Jenny Cornette, Fred Burleson, T.R. Burleson, Jr., Robert Burleson, Carolyn Burnette, Julia Ellis and Angie Duncan. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home with Revs. Homer Murdock, Jr., James McKinney and David Wiseman officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
