Phnom Pehn, Cambodia - Shaun Bowden, 42, former Asheville resident, world traveler, writer, and aficionado of music, literature, film, and food, Shaun Michael Bowden (Perrigo), 42, died June 12, 2013, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Shaun was born September 28, 1970, in Camden, NJ to Patrice Frances Perrigo and William Bowden.
He grew up in Asheville, NC and attended TC Roberson HS (Arden, NC) and Asheville HS. Shaun joined the United States Navy in June of 1988 with his best mate, Matt Olofson and served as an Operations Specialist aboard the U.S.S. Tortuga in The Persian Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm, 1990-1991. In May of 1992, Shaun was honorably discharged.
After the Navy, Shaun began a lasting, grand and unguided tour of the world, which included major U.S. cities, such as, Wilmington, NC; New York, New York; Chapel Hill, NC; New Orleans, LA; San Diego, CA; North Park, SD; and Honolulu, HI, and he attended a live taping of The Price Is Right in Los Angeles, CA.
In 2005, Shaun began traveling abroad in South America and South East Asia (Venezuela, Brazil, Columbia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia). While in Cambodia, he volunteered as an English tutor at an orphanage in a small village outside Phnom Penh. In 2010, he acquired Whitemoon Bar in Phnom Penh and re-vamped it into the first punk type bar in the region. In 2011, Shaun opened Oblivion Bar in Koh Lanta, Thailand. He had just returned to Cambodia a few months before his passing. He was a beloved member of the social club, WWAC.
Shaun was best known for his quick-witted intelligence, creativity, and generous heart. His friends and family describe him as loyal and fearless, honest and agenda less. Shaun lived the life of a man who truly understood that it's the people and experiences in life that matter; material possessions meant nothing to him. He was one of the most free and uniquely amazing people this world will ever know. It was impossible to meet Shaun and not leave with a story.
RIP Shaun Bowden-Perrigo, yours is a gilded soul. Thanks for the billion laughs.
