Cockrell, Sr.

Black Mountain - Ray William Cockrell, Sr., 86, of Black Mountain passed away Saturday February 1, 2014.

Mr. Cockrell was born September 10, 1927 in Alexander County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of his life. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Black Mountain for 64 years where he served as Deacon, Usher, Sunday School teacher, Royal Ambassadors, and Brotherhood Men. He loved his church and the Lord.

Ray was a veteran of the United States Army/Air Force serving during World War II and Korean War from 1946-1951.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Junie Bentley Cockrell.

Mr. Cockrell is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Polly Cockrell; children, Ray Cockrell, Jr., Mary Etta Cockrell, Alice Patton, and Ann Cockrell; sister, Ruth Stepp; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 12:00pm in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Black Mountain Capital Improvement Fund, PO Box 656, Black Mountain, NC 28711.

Arrangements are in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals.
