John Joseph "Pop" Cummings

Candler - John Joseph "Pop" Cummings, 73, of Candler, NC, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the CarePartners Hospice/Solace Center in Asheville.

Born January 16, 1941 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late John Francis Cummings (1979) and Margaret Callahan Cummings (1989).

After graduating high school, Mr. Cummings joined the United Stated Air Force. He later retired from a lifetime of work in auto body repair. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Candler, NC. Mr. Cummings was a member of many organizations, including the Wounded Warriors Project, FurEver Friends, Asheville Humane Society, NRA, Elks Lodge, and the VFW.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Marge Cummings (2005) and Rita Fraioli (1977).

Survivors include his son, John E. Cummings and wife, Laurie, of Jacksonville, FL; daughters, Christine Silvas and husband, David, of Jacksonville, FL and Janeen Grondahl and husband, Jim, of Candler, NC; sister, Geraldine Brower and husband, Marion, of Candler, NC; grandchildren, Sean Cummings, Sarah Cummings, Natasha Goodrum and husband, Galen, Ciara Silvas, Bryant Grondahl and Preston Grondahl; great-grandchildren, Emma and Abby Goodrum, and Gaborik Grondahl; and his constant companion, "Ben," his Yorkshire Terrier.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28803; Asheville Humane Society, 14 Forever Friends Lane, Asheville, NC 28806; or to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Rd. Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.

John was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, and brother. Being of Irish heritage, he was born with the true "gift of gab." John had a great sense of humor and leaves behind wonderful memories to all who knew and loved him. "May you be in heaven 10 minutes before the devil knows you're dead."
