Asheville - A memorial service for Elaine M. Gasser, who died December 23, 2013, will be held 3:30 PM, Friday, March 28, in the Memorial Chapel of Brooks-Howell Home. Rev. Sonny Reavis and Rev. Don Turman will officiate.

Ms. Gasser was born May 16, 1930 outside Baraboo, WS to Robert W. and Louise Rehbein Gasser. She had two older brothers, Melvin and William (Bill), both deceased.

Of German/Swiss heritage, the Evangelical Church was a central part of the Gasser family life. Elaine was nurtured with a deep interest in mission.

Following graduation from North Central College in Naperville, IL, she spent three years teaching social studies and English at Red Bird Mission in Beverly, KY. In 1953 she was told of the need for another teacher at Harford School in Moyamba, Sierra Leone, West Africa. After receiving an MA in English, University of WS, she left in August, 1954, to begin ten years at Harford. She taught English, served as Acting Principal for one year and worked with the Harford School and Moyamba Church Choirs.

The next 26 years (1965-1990) were spent on the staff of Women's Division, first on the staff of the EUB Women's Division in Dayton, OH. Following church union in 1968, she moved to New York City as head of United Methodist Women's Program and Education for Mission and Membership Development.

She and her life partner, Joyce Anderegg, moved to Brooks-Howell in 1998, where she became active in the community and at Biltmore United Methodist Church.

In addition to Joyce, Elaine is survived by several nieces and nephews.
