Alexander Toney

Marion - Howard Alexander Toney, age 87, of Marion, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014. He was born in East Marion and was a son of the late Will and Katie C. Toney. Howard was married to Dorothy (Dot) Neighbors July 3, 1948. They were married for 60 years before her death March 19, 2009. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by stepmother, Ethel C.Toney, two sisters, Arminta Toney Hall and Margie Toney Gillenwater and two brothers, Loy Toney and Willard Toney.

Howard is survived by one son, Randall Toney and wife, Brenda, of Belmont; one sister, Doris T. Poteat of Marion, along with two nieces and two nephews.

Howard was a 1944 graduate of Marion High School. He was an active member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater - Okinawa and Korea with 7th Division of the Army. During his time in service he acquired the following service medals: Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, World War II Medal, Victory Medal, Occupation Medal - Japan, Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksman. He was involved and worked many years with Explorer Scouting. Howard was retired from Marion Manufacturing Company after 40 years of service, lastly as Computer Department Supervisor.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 2 PM at Cross Memorial Baptist Church with Revs. Doug Prevette and Billy Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 in Westmoreland Chapel from 6 to 8 PM. Interment will follow the service at McDowell Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the US Army.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of one's choice and/or Cross Memorial Baptist Church, 61 Cross Memorial Baptist Church Loop, Marion, N. C. 28752.
