Doris Matthews Obituary

Doris Wendling

Matthews

Asheville - Doris Wendling Matthews died on December 17, 2012 in Asheville.

She was born Doris Louise Wendling to parents Jack E. and Amelia Wendling on April 6, 1927 in Lafayette, Indiana.

Doris graduated from Jefferson High School in Lafayette class of 1945. While attending Purdue University, Doris met William Donald Matthews who she married on June 12, 1948. Doris and Bill had four children; William Theodore Matthews, Thomas Owen Matthews and twins, John Karl Matthews and Joyce Ann Matthews.

Doris and Bill followed Bill's construction career to the states of Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Texas, and South Carolina before settling in Brevard, N.C. Bill preceded Doris in death in February 1991. Doris met Roy M. Matthews while they both attended a meeting for recently bereaved spouses. They were married in the Spring of 1992 and lived in Pisgah Forest for a number of years before moving to Givens Estates in Asheville.

Doris was known for her outgoing and friendly personality and enjoyed cooking for and entertaining her family and guests. She was an avid collector of antiques and enjoyed using them to expertly decorate her homes. In her later years, she and Roy traveled overseas as well as in the United States. Doris also worked with handicapped children and helped them to learn to swim.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
