Stephen Wolff Obituary

Stephen J.

Wolff

Asheville - Stephen J. Wolff, aged 55, passed away suddenly Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at home. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville. The family will receive friends at the church at 10 AM preceding the service.

Mr. Wolff was born in Covington, Kentucky on December 4, 1957 to the late Raymond and Geraldine Wolff. At the time of his death, Mr. Wolff was a resident of Asheville with his loving wife, Virginia, and three children, a son, Walker Raymond Wolff, and two daughters, Wynter Marie Wolff and Waverly Landers Wolff. His is also survived by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Wolff-Blom, Mary Therese Schroer and a brother, Walter Paul Wolff, all of Florence, Kentucky.

Mr. Wolff graduated from Covington Latin High School and earned his bachelors degrees in Sociology and Philosophy from Northern Kentucky University in 1979. Upon graduating college and marrying the love of his live, Virginia, the two embarked upon adventures that led them to work and live at Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Maui, Hawaii. Following the births of their children in Hawaii, the Wolff family moved to Asheville in 2001, making a home in Biltmore Park.

Stephen was a loving husband and dedicated father, always active in many sports leagues, as a soccer referee and working with theatre groups. His free time was spent doting on his three cherished children. Always with a new joke to share with his many friends, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, PO Box 2733, Durham, NC 27715-2733.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family and the memorial register is available at grocefuneralhome.com.

Dear Wolff Family,
It saddened me and my husband when we heard that Steve passed away. We only knew him through Kinko's as customers. He always greeted me by name and was always interested in how I was doing. We always appreciated him and the team he built there. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

It's taken me awhile to write something for Steve....He was always so supportive of my work and made sure to tell me how proud he was of me.

If I…

If I don't believe your voice ever spoke,
will your words fall out of my mind?
If I don't look past all the mirrors and smoke,
will the secrets stay safely behind?

I can't keep you here.
I can't let you go.
I can't stay asleep or awake.
My tears are half-empty when they aren't half-full,
my voice was the first thing to break –

You gave me the world without even a pause,
you put it right into my hands.
You were not quite a father but more than a friend,
now I no longer know where I stand.

Because all that is left
are the scraps of your life,
fluttering past in the breeze.
Your smile and laugh,
and a thousand days past,
they're flying just out of my reach.

If I can pretend that you're just out of town,
will that ease the ache in my brain?
Can I come up with reasons that you're not around?
Will it hold off the tears and the pain?

If I never start.
If I lie to my heart.
If I never cry
and try not to try.
If I sing this song,
will you somehow go on?
If I never grieve,
will you never leave?

Virginia and W3(Walker, Wynter, Waverly)- I just found out about Steve on the HFC/ABYSA home page (went on to see if Parker's friends signed to play in college). After reading all of these messages, there is really nothing more to say about the essence and quality of a man who absolutely loved life and his fellow man. I will miss his pleasant presence, but he has left behind his quality legacy through the children he and Virginia produced. He is one individual who really did make a difference. I hope he is at peace.

I had the pleasure of working with Steve over the past 5 years at Fedex. Business associates are usually just... well business associates, but working with Steve and being around Steve was much more like being around a good friend. I am very sorry for this great and painful loss. I hope you take some solace in knowing from even the most casual acquaintance Steve was truly a great guy.
Sincerely
Russ Thomas

Steve and I were best buds growing up in Lakeside Park, KY. I have too many memories to even begin to recount. We went to different high schools but we trained together for various sports. Most memorable was Steve teaching me the Fosbury Flop high jumping method in his backyard on Latin School's equipment, pole vaulting and the many many neighborhood softball games we played there as well.Steve was a dedicated competitor. I saw Steve at Mrs. Wolff's funeral last year and now I am so grateful for being able to spend some time with him then. Prior to that I hadn't seen Steve for over 20 years. Rest in peace my good friend. You will be missed.

We were so shocked and saddened by the news of Steve's death. Words can not express the sorrow we feel for your family. I came to know Steve as a fun-loving and caring friend as a soccer dad, board member at ABYSA and as a referee. His quick jokes and light-hearted nature always brought a smile to our faces. We will be truly missed.

We officiated many soccer games together over the past few years. He told me he liked to ref not only for the kids, but for the friendships he developed with other referees. A lover of classic rock music, he would sing along to the radio on the way to and from soccer games. He loved people and he loved life. He will be missed.
