BLACK MOUNTAIN - Vernon E. Fatzinger, age 91, passed on to be with Jesus Christ, Friday evening at Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC. Since 1993 he was a resident of Black Mountain, NC. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, February 16, 1922 to Ralph Fatzinger and Charlotte Bricker Fatzinger. He was a 1941 graduate of Springfield High School.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 64 years, Pauline May (Kendall) Fatzinger, and his youngest son, Rev. Daniel E. Fatzinger of Clewiston Florida. He was also preceded in death by two older sisters, Eunice Fatzinger Webb of Sidney, Ohio and Jeanette Fatzinger Houck of Springfield.
He is survived by his younger sister, Wilda Fatzinger Kellar, Springfield, OH, and oldest son, Rev. Stephen E. Fatzinger, Swannanoa, NC; daughters-in-law Diana (Sullins) Fatzinger, Swannanoa, NC and Margo (Bailey) Fatzinger, Clewiston Florida; two grandsons, Stephen R. Fatzinger, JD, Thornton, CO and Scott E. Fatzinger, Denver, CO.; three granddaughters, Christina Fatzinger, Springfield, OH., Leann (Fatzinger) Vann, Linda (Fatzinger) Callahan, Clewiston, FL; two step-grandsons, Colin Poe, Millville, NJ and Matthew Lutz, New York, NY, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by thirty-five nieces and nephews.
He was a veteran of WW II, 1942-1946, with the Army Corps of Engineers, stationed in Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and the Philippine Islands. Following discharge he was employed for several years at Steel Products. Then for the next 34 years he was a tool designer at Wright- Patterson AFB, Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was a former member of the Hillside Church of God, Springfield, OH. He taught the 9th grade Sunday School class for many years. For the past 15 years he has been a member of the Faith Community Church of God, Black Mountain, NC. He was known by his family and friends as a man of strong Christian faith who loved God and many people, and he was also a generous man with his time and resources.
Vernon's family wishes to thank Francis Coates and the staff at The McCune Center, and his roommate and best friend, Melvin Brown.
Wilson Family Funeral Services of Black Mountain, NC held a viewing Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 6 to 8 P.M. A memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Wickers and held at the Chapel at the Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, NC on Wednesday, March 27, 2 P.M.
