WEST ASHEVILLE - Betty Kirby Spencer, 80, went to be with our Creator on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Born Nancy Elizabeth Kirby in Asheville, NC on December 13, 1932, she was preceded in death by her parents, Kenyon Minus and Mary Lou Stephens Kirby.
Betty graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1951, attended the Woman's College of UNC at Greensboro, and Asheville- Biltmore College. She was formerly employed as a Buncombe County Deputy Tax Collector and retired in 1993 after 30 years of service. Except for a brief time living in Florence, SC, she was a life long resident of West Asheville and a member of West Asheville Presbyterian Church. Betty loved visiting the Lowcountry of South Carolina and cherished her memories of the times that she spent in Charleston, on the Isle of Palms, and Sullivan's Island with her family and friends. She also was an avid bird watcher and lover of all animals, especially cats.
She is survived by her sons, Scott K. Spencer of the home, Robert (Bob) E. Spencer, Jr. and his wife, Norma, of Asheville; two grandchildren, Jennifer Anne Hester and her husband, John, of Fairview, and Robert (Robbie) E. Spencer III and his wife, Andi, of Asheville; and her beloved twin two year old great-grandsons, Joseph Bull and Joshua Carson Spencer. She also leaves behind her two much loved tabbies, Missy and Tommy.
A Memorial Service for Betty will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, April 27, 2013, at West Asheville Presbyterian Church, 690 Haywood Rd. in West Asheville, NC, with Dr. J. Ben Sloan and Rev. Kent Smith officiating. The family will receive friends for 90 minutes prior to the service at the church. At other times the family will be at the residence on Sand Hill Road.
In lieu of flowers, Betty requested that memorials be made in her name to West Asheville Presbyterian Church, 690 Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC 28806, Susan G. Koman for the Cure, P.O. Box 96216, Washington, DC 20090, or the Asheville Humane Society, 14 Forever Friend Lane, Asheville, NC 28806.
