Weaverville - Margaret "Greta" McArthur Paterson, 78, died peacefully on April 19, 2013 in her home in Weaverville, NC, surrounded by her loving daughters.
Greta was born in Carmunnock, Scotland to John Shaw Houston and Isabella McCrory Houston on July 30, 1934. Greta is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Isabel and husband, John Strachan Paterson. Greta is survived by her daughters, Fiona Dudley of Weaverville, NC and Aileen Paterson of Berkeley, CA; siblings, Jim Houston of Durban, South Africa, Jean Black of Freuchie, Scotland, John Houston of Dayton, OH, Alan Houston of Liverpool, England, and Grace Dangerfield of Colby, Cumbria, England.
Greta started her long career as a reference librarian at a young age with the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. Greta and John, married in Edinburgh in 1957, emigrated to Toronto, Canada with friends in 1959 and eventually settled in Old Lyme, CT, where they raised their two children. Throughout her life, Greta was a lover of literature and art, a writer, an avid gardener, world traveler, and correspondent with family and friends around the world. She has planted seeds of understanding and love in all who knew her. An honest woman lies here at rest
As e'er God with his image blest
The friend of man, the friend of truth
The friend of age, and guide of youth
Few hearts like hers - with virtue warmed
Few heads with knowledge so informed
If there's another world, she lives in bliss
If there is none, she made the best of this.
- Robert Burns
Greta was a woman like no other
Wiser than an owl
Stronger than all of Scotland
A gardener of all, until the end
The wine is like blood
For the Saints
- Tom Dudley
