Alexander Berkow Obituary

Alexander Berkow

Leicester - Alexander Berkow of Leicester, N.C., was born in San Francisco, CA and spent his first seven years in Pacifica, Ca. He died Friday, July 21, 2017, in a motorcycle accident.

Alexander was the son of Paul Berkow and Barbara Mannheim, and is survived by loving aunts JoAnne Berkow (Steve Tendrich), Lee Makarov and Marilyn Williams (Gordon). His cousins are Bryan Ellison, Michael Makarov, Earl Williams (Allyson) and Elizabeth Robbins (Jim). The children of Earl (Naomi, Daniella and Sophie) and the children of Elizabeth (Jacob Tolle, Rachel and Juliana Robbins) also survive him.

Alexander attended Erwin High School, going on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to earn a degree in Molecular Biology. He spent two years doing research at the National Institute of Health, contributing to published papers.

He earned a construction license. Most recently he was known in downtown Asheville for juggling different heavy tools upon request.

He was involved in aerial silk trapeze gymnastics.

He was dynamic and passionate about his interests, strove for independence and told the truth straight as he saw it.

A memorial was held at the Asheville Jewish Community Center. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society because of Alexander's love of animals.

Alex will be missed greatly. I will miss our in depth conversations about life. I will miss his passion, compassion, intelligence, talent, and wit. He was my roommate in Asheville and also became good friends with my father.
