Sister M. Magdalene Fanucci, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, N.J., went to her eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, York, where she had been a resident for nine months.
Sister Magdalene, born in Germania (a municipality of Galloway Township), N.J., on Oct. 12, 1928, was the daughter of the late Santino and Marion Comerota Fanucci of Scranton. She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy in York on Feb. 2, 1944, and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1945.
Dedicated to her religious vocation and to her ministry as an educator, Sister Magdalene spent most of her life teaching at both the elementary and secondary levels. She was also a principal for many years.
After having obtained her bachelor's degree in elementary education from College Misericordia, Dallas, Sister Magdalene went on to earn a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Scranton and a master's degree in library science from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
She taught in schools staffed by her religious order at Sacred Heart School, Milford, Mass.; St. Mary's, Old Forge; Most Precious Blood, Hazleton; St. Mary Magdalen School, Millville, N.J.; and at St. Rose of Lima School, Newfield, N.J. She served as principal at Mount Carmel School, Springfield, Mass.; Monsignor Molino Elementary School, Hazleton; St. Francis School, Vineland, N.J.; St. Joan of Arc School, Hershey; and St. Joseph School, Berwick.
In recent years and until the time of her retirement, she held the position of librarian/media coordinator at Bishop O'Reilly High School, Kingston. Sister was a member of the Harrisburg Diocesan School Board for two years and held membership in several other educational associations.
In addition to her involvement in education, Sister Magdalene served on the Sisters Advisory Council in both the Scranton and Harrisburg dioceses for a number of years.
In addition to her parents, Sister Magdalene was preceded in death by her brothers, Angelo and Francis Fanucci.
Surviving are her brother, the Rev. Santino Fanucci, residing at Villa St. Joseph, Dunmore; sister-in-law, Gloria Fanucci, Enterprise, Ala.; her nieces, Christine LaMonica, Hazleton; and Joan Parrish, Chandler, Ariz.; her nephew, Francis X. Fanucci, Mobile, Ala.; her great-niece, Angela LaMonica Moore, Hazleton; great-nephews, Zackary Parrish and Luke Parrish, Chandler, Ariz.; and Samuel Fanucci, Georgia; and by her religious community, the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 1101 Willow St., Peckville, at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Relatives and friends may call at James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main St., Peckville, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday.

My family were members of Saint Francis Church in Nanticoke. We are so fond of Father and we met his dear Sister many times. We enjoyed the stories Father told us of his life as a little boy when giving his sermon. We will remember Sister in our prayers.
