Albert A. Sweeney

Albert A. Sweeney, 81, of Wilkes-Barre passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 14, 1932, a son of the late Albert and Lena Ebert Sweeney.

Albert attended Meyers High School and he served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Prior to his retirement, he had been employed for many years as a mechanic by the Topps Chewing Gum Co. in Duryea.

Albert played semi-pro baseball in his younger years. He was also a champion horseshoe player. He was a former member of the Hanover Township American Legion and Mountain Top American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Frances Amann Sweeney, in 2011; by his brother, Robert Sweeney; and by his sisters, Pearl Yekel and Ruth Kushnir.

He is survived by his son, Gene and his wife, Brenda, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Sweeney; great-granddaughter, Adrionna Sweeney; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with Deacon Francis Bradigan officiating.

Entombment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
