Barbara A. Williams of Nanticoke succumbed to a second stroke Saturday evening, May 3, 2014, that ended a fierce battle to maintain her independence against the debilitating toll of decades of COPD.
Born in Nanticoke on June 13, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Evan and Florence Williams. She graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1956, and then worked at the Pentagon and Spaulding University in Louisville, Ky. She retired to Jasper, Ind., to live with her companion, Richard Matheis, who predeceased her; at which time she returned to Nanticoke.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Evan and his wife, Ann Marie, Rock Hill, N.Y., and their daughter, Nicole, Endicott, N.Y. She also leaves behind many friends she made in Jasper, Ind.; prominent among them were Greg Matheis his wife, Vickie.
Barbara cultivated many relationships at her summer retreat at Lily Lake; none of them more important than Don Burd.
The family would like to thank the exceptional staff of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and Birchwood Nursing Home for the superlative care they provided. A special thank you should be added for her personal physician, Dr. Wolanin.
Private funeral services were held from Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home Inc., 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke.
