Charles J. Murphy, 87, of Pittston Township passed away peacefully Sunday evening, Nov. 10, 2013, in Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Pittston on Oct. 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph and Hilda McAndrew Murphy.
He attended Pittston Township schools and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish Community, Pittston.
He was a veteran of World War II
, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps
in the Pacific Theater.
In his younger years, he was an avid outdoorsman, having a great love for nature. He liked football and enjoyed watching Penn State, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers games.
Prior to retirement, he was employed by the former Continental Cigar Co., Moosic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rosemary Tozzi; sisters, Mildred Derovage and Catherine Murphy; three brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Kopko and her husband, Joseph, Wyoming; granddaughters, Kristin and Kathy Kopko, both of Wyoming; sisters, Marian Faile, South Carolina; Ethel Shannon, New York; and Jean Marie Murphy, with whom he resided; brothers, Joseph Murphy, Virginia; and Thomas Murphy and his wife, Barbara, Pittston Township; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gerald P. Gibbons Jr. for his wonderful care, the doctors and staff at the Geisinger Henry Cancer Center and Celtic Hospice Care for their kind and compassionate treatment. The family is very grateful to Monsignor John J. Bendik for his kind support and concern.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William St., Pittston, with Monsignor Bendik, his pastor, officiating. Family and friends attending are asked to go directly to the church on Wednesday morning. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
