Dean R. Malkemes

Dean R. Malkemes, 78, of Hanover Township passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at home.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 12, 1934, the son of the late Franklin C. and Mildred Keithline Malkemes.

Dean was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 1952. He was employed by Modern Floor Co., Wilkes-Barre, until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Malkemes was an avid golfer, who also enjoyed going to various casinos. In his earlier years, Dean excelled in baseball and played professionally in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Ann Kitlas; granddaughter, Rachel Malkemes; sister, Nancy Schumaker; and brother, Frank Malkemes.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Peggy Scanlon; sons, Michael Malkemes and his wife, Susan, Mountain Top; and Mark Malkemes and his wife, Cindy, Dallas; grandchildren, Jennifer Stinson, John Davis, Matthew and Becky Malkemes, Miranda Connolley, Nicholas and Nina Malkemes; great-granddaughter, Reagan Connolley; sister, Mary Lou Widman, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Lee Malkemes, Hanover Township; sister-in-law, Catherine Jones, Hanover Township; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with the Rev. James McGahagan officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. There are no public calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Church, Parish Street, Wilkes-Barre, the former St. Patrick's Church.
