Edward J. Walkowiak

Edward J. Walkowiak, 87 of North Wilkes-Barre, entered into eternal life Saturday evening, March 29, 2014, shortly after admission in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born March 7, 1927 in Plains Township, he was a son to the late Frank and Elizabeth (Sekel) Walkowiak. He was educated in the city schools.

Following his education, Mr. Walkowiak proudly served our country during the Second World War with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater.

Until his retirement, Ed worked as a delivery and salesman for the Lion Brewery, formerly Stegmaier and Gibbons of Wilkes-Barre for over 35 years. Following his retirement, he remained active by working with the voter services for the Luzerne County Bureau of Elections.

Having a love of the outdoors, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was the patriarch of the Brookside Sports Hunting Group of Overton Township in Bradford County. He is remembered by family as being a wonderful story teller to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Walkowiak was a member of St. Andre Bessette Parish, Wilkes-Barre, and held membership in the North End Slovak Citizens Club. He also served as the Democratic committeeman for Wilkes-Barre's 16th Ward in the city's North End.

He and his beloved wife, the former Christine M. Latsko shared 66 years of married life together on Nov. 2, 2013.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Liscavage.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Christine, at home, are children, Donald J. and his wife, Helene; Edward R. and his wife, Lorie; William and his wife, Debra Walkowiak; Debra Balut and her husband, John; and Lisa Walkowiak, all of Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, including, Jamie (Kevin) Metzger, John (Erin) Balut, Stephanie Walkowiak, Delaina Walkowiak and Fiancé Alex Ocasio, Bill Walkowiak Jr., Kyle Walkowiak, Kara Walkowiak, Tara Kratz and Heather Kratz; nine great-grandchildren; twin brother, Frank and his wife, Delores, Edwardsville; brothers, Carl and his wife, Pat; and Joseph and his wife, Carol Walkowiak, all of North Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Florence Meli and her husband, Vincent, Englewood, Fla.; and Eleanor Donati, Plains Township; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Walkowiak will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the North Wilkes-Barre location of John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 N. Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka worship site of St. Andre Bessette Parish, 668 N. Main St. The Rev. Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor, will serve as celebrant.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Relatives and friends may join the Walkowiak family for visitation and remembrances from 5 until 8 p.m Tuesday.
