Fira Rose Furino, 95, of West Wyoming passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at The Laurels Nursing Center, Kingston.
Born in Swoyersville on Feb. 23, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Melchior and Maryann Colura Furino.
She was a member of St. Monica's Parish/Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming, for more than 70 years and was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and Sodality. She also worked at all their church picnics in those days.
She graduated from Swoyersville High School in 1936.
The family resided on Hazel Street, Swoyersville, for many years until the death of her mother, then moved to Shoemaker Avenue, West Wyoming, for 53 years and later Rose and her sister, Ann, resided on Swetland Lane, West Wyoming, for the past 20 years, and for the past 15 months was a resident of The Laurels, Third Avenue, Kingston.
She was formerly employed by United Pants Co. for 42 years until her retirement.
Aunt Rose loved to watch Lawrence Welk, the polkas and her daytime stories. She liked going for car rides and doing Find-A-Word books. She was a very happy person and liked to sing songs and laugh at silly things.
Aunt Rose especially looked forward to seeing all the youngest great-great-nephews and niece, Luke and Jackson, Owen and Colton, and Faith, who visited her frequently and always made her happy.
Aunt Rose will be sadly missed by all her nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her sisters and brothers, Lena Amato and husband, Anthony; Mary Locascio and husband, Samuel; Ann Furino; Angeline Lacina and husband, William; Joseph Furino and wife, Helen; and Michael Furino and wife, Rachael.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday from Anthony Recupero Funeral Home, 406 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming, with the Rev. McKernan as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Laurels for their kindness to Rose and also the hospice nurses for their comfort care.
