Helen I. Burd

Helen I. Burd, 85, of 280 Pond Hill Mountain Road, Wapwallopen, concluded her journey in this life at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at Berwick Retirement Village II.

Born in Plymouth on Aug. 11, 1927, a daughter of the late Gary and Velma Ogin Deno, she attended the Plymouth schools and, prior to her marriage, was employed by the former Duplan Silk Mill. Since marriage, she was a faithful housewife and mom to her family.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Pond Hill, and the Pond Hill Fire and Ambulance Association. Helen enjoyed gospel and church songs and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Richard D. (Dempsey) Burd, on Aug. 11, 2009; that was also their marriage date.

She was also preceded in death by brothers, Harold, Donald, Merritt and Albert Deno; sisters, Mildred Bonomo and Mae Gross; and a stepbrother, Tom Deno.

Helen will be remembered by her children, Eleanor I. Cragle, Mifflinville; Betty J. Shuman and husband, Duane, Mainville; Richard Burd Jr. and wife, Linda, Briggsville; Elmer Burd, at home; Donald Burd, Slocum; and Ronald Burd Sr., Slocum; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Raymond Deno and wife, Elaine, Hazleton; and Lloyd Deno and wife, Rose, Ashley.

A service to honor her life and faith will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 285 Pond Hill Mountain Road, Wapwallopen, with the Rev. Debra North, pastor, presiding. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Pond Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, and in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund of the church.
