Irene Buchinski, 96, of Nanticoke passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Celtic Healthcare Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Born on April 27, 1918, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Julia Welgoss Franko who owned a variety store on West Broad Street. She graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1936, and worked at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J., early in life.
She later worked for many years for several factories in the local garment industry with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. She was last employed by the Bureau of Aging and the Commission of Equal Opportunity, assisting people in their homes.
Irene was a member of Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke, and was a life-long member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Nanticoke, until its closing. Her main interest in life was her family, home and church. She loved cooking and baking, enjoyed crocheting, and knitting, and will be remembered for her talent and excellent sewing skills. She sewed many articles of clothing for her family as well as wedding gowns.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in May 1968, and sisters, Eleanor Franko and Ellen Morgan.
Surviving are her children, Elaine Manoski and husband, Joseph, Hanover Township; Stephen Buchinski and Carolyn, Nanticoke; and Mark Buchinski and wife, Maria, Old Bridge, N.J.; grandchildren, Michael Manoski and wife, Karen, Jeffrey Manoski and wife, Lisa, David Buchinski and wife, Amy, Stephanie Grzymski and husband, Greg, Kevin Buchinski and wife, Allison, and Mark, Michelle and Matthew Buchinski; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Swiderski and husband, Victor (Speedy), Nanticoke; and several nieces and nephews.
Panachida will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with Divine Liturgy at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, 240 Center St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Volodymyr Popyk as celebrant.
Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Sheatown section of Newport Township.
Friends may call Thursday (today) with Parastas at 6:30 p.m. and visitation until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
