John C. Kal

John C. Kal, a retired civil engineer for the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, from a recent illness.

A 1949 graduate of Edwardsville High School, John served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bristol until 1953.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Civil Engineering degree from the Catholic University of America.

His career at the FAA spanned 42 years, developing and instituting airport safety standards, public accessibility, and airport certification for which he received many honors and distinctions.

John was a member of the Polish Club of College Park, 3191, the Knights of Columbus of Washington, D.C., the American Legion of College Park, the Polish Legion of American Veterans, The University of Maryland Alumni Association, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

He is survived by the love of his life, Peggy Bennett, their three adoring daughters and families, including four beloved grandchildren, cousins, extended family and many friends.

A memorial service in Luzerne County will be set at a later date.
