John J. Kunicki

John J. Kunicki, 93, of Dupont died Thursday evening, Oct. 24, 2013, in Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township. He is the husband of the former Stanis Jasczak, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1946.

He was born in Dupont, son of the late George and Veronica Gobczenski Kunicki, and was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Dupont.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the 209th and 82nd Anti-Aircraft and Field Artillery Battalion with the rank of technician fifth grade. He served in Ireland, Tunisia, Rome, Italy, Arno, central France and Germany. He was issued an European Theater of Operations ribbon with six battle stars, a bronze arrowhead and a Good Conduct Medal.

John started his working career in the coal mines and after the war worked as an auto mechanic for the Frank Felice Buick Dealership. He also served as treasurer and custodian for Dupont Borough for 16 years.

He was a life member and past commander of AMVETS Post 189 and its honor guard, participating in more than 200 military funerals. He was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 and American Legion Post 0557, Dupont.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Susan Doxbeck and her husband, Joseph, Exeter; and Ann Marie Delasandro and her husband, Patrick, Plains Township; grandchildren, Annette Delasandro and her husband, Ken Johnson; Patrick Delasandro and Andrew Delasandro and his wife, Julie; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Addison Delasandro.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Slazak, Victoria Ruda, Lottie Maleski, Helen Kunicki and Sister Mary Leonard, D.M.; and brothers, Walter and Joseph Kunicki.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Lokuta-Zawacki Funeral Home, 200 Wyoming Ave., Dupont, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery Chapel, Lackawanna Avenue and Pine Street, Dupont, to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph D. Verespy, pastor.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Dupont.
