John Jefferson, 67, of Ashley passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at HCR Manorcare Rehabilitation Center, Kingston.
Born Oct. 27, 1945, John was the son of the late Edward P. Jefferson and June Golden Jefferson.
He was a life parishioner of St. Leo's Church and resided on Ridge Street his entire life.
He graduated from St. Leo's High School as valedictorian. John furthered his education by graduating from King's College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and with a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Scranton.
John began his career with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by working for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. He went on to be employed for over 30 years by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Resources, as a water quality specialist, before retiring in 2007.
John was a member of the Wyoming Valley Holy Name Bowling League for more than 20 years.
John enjoyed the simpler things in life. He loved gardening, cooking, baking his famous cheesecakes, decorating for holidays and going on vacations. He shared a great love and appreciation of music with his daughter. John found his greatest joys in spending time with his family and pets. His quiet, distinguished mannerisms espoused a caring man full of wisdom and love.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brother, Thomas Edward Jefferson, and infant sister Mary Jefferson.
Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Rita Muth Jefferson, Ashley; adoring daughter, Lisa Jefferson, Philadelphia; and sister, Ann Roman and her husband, Ed, Shavertown. Surviving also are John's dear family of brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Sue Muth; Joe and Geralyn Muth; Miriam and Ron Neher; Gerard and Robin Muth; Flo Muth; Cathy and Tom Richards; and Jean Muth. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews who brought him great love, Katie, Chuck, Mollie and Andy Grove; Michelle, Curtis and Hunter Harned; Ron, Ashley, Krissy, Jack and Olivia Neher; Brian, Sarah, Nathan and Eliana Muth; Sara and Marty Kane; Melissa and Brian Osick; Patrick Muth; Tom Richards; Michelle Beloin; Amy Muth; Sami Muth; Becky Richards; Ally Muth; Abby Muth; Mary Roman; Kevin Roman; Christopher Jefferson; Brett Jefferson; and Patrick Jefferson; as well as very dear family friend, Karen Schreiber.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. from St. Leo's/Holy Rosary Church, Manhattan Street, Ashley. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service Monday.
