John T. Balla, 70, a resident of Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y., for over 40 years and a native of Nanticoke, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke, where he had been a patient for the past several weeks.
Born on Feb. 20, 1943, he was the son of the late John and Emma Kanyuck Balla. He graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1960, and earned a BS degree in accounting from Wilkes College in 1965.
John had been employed by the U.S. Treasury Department for many years and early in his career with the Internal Revenue Service and Government Accounting Office. Prior to retiring, he was employed as a Computer Audit Specialist with the U.S. Customs Service in New York City for 26 years.
He was a member of St. John Slovak Lutheran Church, Nanticoke, the Wagner Society of New York as well as the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Central Park folk dance group for many years.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Bray and Shirley Kelly Carruthers.
Surviving are sisters, Dr. Isabel Westfried, Newtown Square; Joan Anderson and her husband, Andy, Waynesboro, Va.; and Margaret Quijano, Drums; nieces and nephews, Linda Bray Walters, Bonnie Bray Floryshak, Nancy Bray Turner, William P. Bray, Eric Mason Westfried, Debbie Kiser, Michael and Mark Danko and Daniel, John and Robert Kelly.
A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 11:30 a.m. in St. John Slovak Lutheran Church, 604 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Chip Fairchild officiating.
Interment will follow in Nanticoke Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke.
