Joseph D. Hannon, 82, of Avoca passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Wesley Village, Pittston.
Born in Avoca on Jan. 14, 1932, he was a son of the late Joseph P. and Mary Bradbury Hannon.
He graduated from St. Mary's Parochial School, Avoca, and St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, Class of 1949. Joseph continued his education at the University of Scranton and King's College.
Joseph was a devoted member of Queen of the Apostles Church, Avoca, where he served as a parish lector, and past president of St. Mary's Holy Name Society. He was also a past president of the Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Joseph served on Avoca Borough Council for nine years, and was president of the Council for seven of those years. He also was very proud to serve as the Avoca mayor from 1969 to 1978.
In 1997, Joseph retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania after 30 years of service, and most recently held the position of administrative officer for the State Workman's Compensation Insurance Fund, Scranton.
Joseph was currently serving as vice chairman of the Luzerne County Board of Assistance, which he had been a member of for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerome, John and Francis, and a sister, Jane Ann Hannon.
Surviving are his brothers, Kenneth F., Washington D.C.; Patrick, Kingston; William, Hanover Township; and Michael J., Avoca; sisters, Mary Burke, Laurel, Md.; Barbara Evans, Justus; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca, with the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Avoca.
Friends are asked to go directly to the church on Saturday.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at Queen of the Apostles Parish, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Queen of the Apostles Parish.
