Dr. Joseph Zarlengo (Malarkey), of West Palm Beach, Fla., died untimely on Wednesday Feb. 12, 2014 in Good Samaritan Hospital, Florida.
Joseph was an accomplished board-certified emergency room physician, having practiced in Pennsylvania, Florida, West Virginia and Georgia.
Joseph was a graduate of Wyoming Area High School. He was a 1994 graduate of The University of Scranton, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. In 1999, Dr. Zarlengo graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Health Sciences — COM, Kansas City, earning his degree, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2000, and in 2003, completed his residency program at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. In 2012, Dr. Zarlengo was awarded certification in Advanced Botox and Dermal Filler techniques from the Esthetic Skin Institute, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Joseph was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Board of Emergency Physicians, and Florida Osteopathic Medical Assosication. Since his early days in medical school, Dr. Zarlengo was the recipient of many awards, including the Bronze Torch Award: recognition for patient satisfaction, Alpha Epilson Delta; National Osteopathic Honor Society, Psi Sigma Alpha; university of Health Sciences Honor society, and topped the charts currently with his patient satisfaction scores.
Dr. Zarlengo was a man endlessly devoted to family, friends and fun.
He proudly was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association after being certified as private pilot in 2004, enjoying flying his wife to many lunch trips in the Florida Keys. Joe was a PAI advanced open water diver, certified in 2011 by the Jupiter Dive Center. Joseph was an appreciator of fine art and culture, supported local talent, music and theater, and was also an avid collector of red wines and at once exotic sports cars.
Joe also enjoyed rides up Florida's coastal A1A on his Harley Davidson and was an annual fixture at Daytona's Bike Week and Biketoberfest. With all of his hobbies and adventures, Joe was happiest doing dinner and a movie. An authentic Italian restaurant, a good glass of red wine, and his family were all he needed to create the perfect evening. Dr. Zarlengo had a magnetic personality, his smile and laughter are what will be remembered most.
Dr. Zarlengo is preceded in death by his parents, the late Thomas Malarkey and Kathleen Malarkey (Pohutsky), of Harding. He is survived by his loving wife, Melissa (Karis-Fox) Zarlengo; children, Mikaela and Jordan Rowe, of Scranton, Ivy Fox and Francesca Zarlengo, West Palm Beach.
Memorial services will be held Saturday March 22, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. from Mamary-Durkin Funeral Services, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.
