Martha Janet Nicol Elston, 98, of Dallas passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas. Born in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Voight Nicol.
She was a 1933 graduate of Kingston High School and a 1936 graduate of Wilkes Barre General Hospital School of Nursing. Martha began her nursing career as a home visiting nurse where she met her future husband who often gave her rides up the hills of Edwardsville in his milk truck when she was visiting her parents. They married in 1939 and lived in Dallas where they owned and opperaterd Shady Side Dairy. After retirement, they purchased and operated Windy Valley Inn in Mehoopany for many years.
Martha was a long-time member of Dallas United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was an avid bridge player. Martha always had a positive outlook on life and had an amazing capacity for enduring friendships. She lived in the Village at Greenbriar since July 2007.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond "Tip" J. Elston, in 1987.
She is survived by her son, Jay M. and his wife, Gail Hillard Elston, Dallas; daughter, Nancy and her husband, S. Brantly Richardson, Santa Rosa, Calif,; grandchildren, Pamela Richardson-Stevens and her husband, Todd, San Francisco, Calif.; Margaret Elston-Tomkinson and her husband, David, Dallas; Amy Elston-Ahouse and her husband, Harry, Sugar Notch; great-grandchildren, Jane M. Tomkinson and Trevor J. Ahouse.
At Martha's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are being conducted by Richard H. Disque Funeral Home Inc., 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas.
