Mary Grace English, 101, of Wilkes-Barre passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late Anthony and Madeline Giovino. Mary attended GAR Memorial High School and was self-employed as an interior decorator.
Mary was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Wilkes-Barre. She was a former member of Holy Rosary Church in Wilkes-Barre, where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and the Sacred Heart & Rosary Society. Mary was a devout Catholic, and she led the praying of the Rosary at weekly Mass. As its most senior parishioner, Mary was honored with the locking of the doors upon the closing of Holy Rosary Church in June 2010.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Anthony D. English, in 1995; and by her brother, William Giovino and her sisters, Annette Alles, Philomena Collona, Mildred Pietrafesa, Constance Masculino and Ann Montage.
Mary is survived by her sons, Anthony D. English Jr. of Wilkes-Barre, with whom she resided; John L. English and his wife, Patricia, Athens, Ga.; grandchildren, Janna Misek and her husband, Miles Misek; Attorney Justin English and his wife, Attorney Eileen King English; Matthew English and his wife, Dr. Gemma English; great-grandchildren, Grace, Madeline and Daniel Misek and Cora English; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. John S. Terry, pastor of Our Lady of Hope Parish, will be the celebrant of the Mass of Resurrection. Private entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. A private viewing will be held for the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to the C.Y.C. Memorial Fund, 36 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
