Matthew Edward Wascavage, 18, of Deer Run Drive, Mountain Top, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, after a courageous lifelong battle with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Matthew was born Dec. 1, 1994, in Arkhangelsk, Russia. He was the son of George Gerard and Patricia Ann Gritsko Wascavage.
He was a graduate of Crestwood High School, Class of 2013, and was currently a freshman at King's College, Wilkes-Barre. He was an honors student throughout his entire academic career.
Matthew was a member of St. Jude Parish, Mountain Top, and a member of their youth group. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 60, Mountain Top.
Matthew enjoyed hanging out with his brother, Kevin, and cousin, Michael, and all his friends, playing video games, following many sports and was an avid New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Penn State football super fan.
Matthew enjoyed life to its fullest and he never complained; he was a true hero and a role model to anyone who had the honor to know him.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Edward J. Gritsko, and paternal grandparents, Michael F. and Mary H. Dzurisin Wascavage.
Matthew is survived by his parents, George and Patti Wascavage; his brother, Kevin Wascavage; his maternal grandmother, Arlene Gritsko; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and Molly, his golden retriever.
Matthew will be greatly missed by his family. He is a true champion and he never gave up on anything. We will love you forever and ever.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Saturday from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Parish, Mountain Top.
Interment will follow in Albert Cemetery, Mountain Top.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday.
