Michael Hvozda

Michael Hvozda, 89, of East Noble Street, Nanticoke, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 10, 2014, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

Born on Nov. 27, 1924, in the Hanover section of Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Andrew and Mary Vargala Hvozda. He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, Class of 1942, and entered the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II aboard the troop ship, U.S.S. Zaurak AK-117.

He married the former Irene Frankowski on Sept. 17, 1949.

Prior to retiring in 1988, Michael was employed by CertainTeed, Mountain Top, for over 20 years.

He was a member of Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke, where he was active with all the church functions, worked fund raisers and caring for the building. He and Irene liked traveling to many locations over the years and enjoyed attending reunions with his fellow shipmates from the USS Zaurak. He was an avid bowler and belonged to the Christian Bowling League in earlier years.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Helen Hvozda Lowery, Anna Hvozda Wempa, John Hvozda, Julie Hvozda Twardowski, Olga Hvozda Dargalis and Andrew Hvozda.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Irene Frankowski Hvozda; daughters, Mary Ann Jarolen and Donna Davis; grandchildren, Jennifer Jarolen Jones and husband, Thomas, Shelley Davis Jr. and fiancee, Beth Kunic, and Michalene Davis; sisters, Mary Hvozda Polnasek, Suzanne Skiptunas and husband, Anthony; as well as nieces and nephews.

Panachida will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, 240 Center St., Hanover section of Nanticoke, with the Rev. Volodymyr Popyk officiating.

Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Nanticoke, with the U.S. Navy according military honors.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Parastas will be at 6:30 p.m.
