Michael (Cactus) Stelma Sr. of Larksville passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his home after a three-year battle with mesothelioma.
Born in Swoyersville, he was a son of the late Adam and Anna Smith Stelma.
Michael was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Larksville.
He was a graduate of Swoyersville High School.
He was a Army
veteran of World War II
, serving in the Harbor Craft Division.
Michael retired from the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 76 after 26 years in the elevator industry.
He was a member of Swoyersville American Legion Post 644, Veterans of Foreign Wars
Kingston Post 283 and the St. Conrad's Young Men's Society, Wilkes-Barre.
Cactus, as he was known to his friends, was an avid golfer and bowler and he enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, in 2004; brothers, John, Andrew and Stephen; and sister, Helen Ondish.
Surviving are his children, Michelle Lewis, Kingston; Mark, Forty Fort; Michael Jr., Georgia; and Matt and his fiancee, Anne Marie Wincek, Plains Township; and grandchildren, Jessica Burger and husband, Harry, Danielle Lewis, Kyle Lewis and Sam Lewis, Mark Stelma Jr. and wife, Donna, Amanda Stelma and Sigourney Stelma.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Galasso and his staff and the staff at Commonwealth Hospice for the care they provided to Michael.
The funeral for Michael will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday from Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Larksville.
Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A Christian wake service will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
