George M. Roskos

George M. Roskos of Scranton died Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, in VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center.

His wife is the former Joan M. Marbach. The couple would have celebrated 42 years of marriage on July 10.

Born in Kingston, son of the late George and Margaret Rokitko Roskos, he was a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church and its auxiliary for years and a former member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston.

He graduated cum laude from the University of Scranton, Class of 1970, receiving a master's degree and certificates in elementary and secondary administration.

George served as principal at Prescott Elementary School for 20 years. Prior to that he was an English teacher at West Scranton High School.

While at West Scranton High School he served as head wrestling coach. In the years 1976, 1978 and 1986 his wrestling teams were the champions of the Lackawanna League, and George was awarded Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1986. He served as president of Lackawanna Scholastic Wrestling League, of which he was co-founder, and also co-founder of the Scranton Elementary Intramural Wrestling Tournament in 1974. He was also an assistant varsity baseball coach at West Scranton for several years. He was a former PIAA wrestling and baseball official. He was a manager and coach of the East Scranton Little League, a former member of the Scranton School District Elementary Principals' Association, where he served as president, the Scranton Association of School Administrators, the Scranton School District Blue Ribbon Panel for long range planning, Scranton School District teacher selection panel and testing committee, National Association of School Principals, and a member of GCU Lodge 31.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eugene Turchetti, Dr. Roger Getts, Dr. Michael Tracey and the staff of VNA Hospice for the kind and compassionate care given to George and his family during his illness.

Also surviving two sons, George Roskos, Scranton; and Greg Roskos and wife, Rebecca, Cortland, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Gwen and Elle; one brother, Ron Roskos and wife, Pat, Kingston; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, two aunts, nieces, nephews and several cousins.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday with Divine Liturgy in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 321 Chestnut Ave., Kingston. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas Township. Anyone attending the funeral is asked to proceed directly to St. Mary's Byzantine Church, Kingston. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann St., Scranton.
