Richard (Dick) L. Mattern, 86, of West Walnut Street, Kingston, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Highland Manor, Exeter, where he was a guest.
He was the son of the late Harold E. and Gertrude Howells Mattern. He graduated from Kingston High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy
as a seaman first class during World War II
Dick was a Pennsylvania state constable serving Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. He earlier was employed by Truck Parts, Sterling Truck Sales and Brinks.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
Anthracite Post 283, Kingston; Moose Lodge 1207, West Pittston; and the Moosic Dart League. He was an avid hunter and made yearly trips to Montana.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary Pat Mattern, in 2005, as well as his brother, Joseph Mattern.
Surviving are his sons, Richard H. and his wife, Martha, Swoyersville; and Kirk T. and his wife, Melissa, Marathon, N.Y.; daughter, Patti Lee Kane, Utah; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a niece and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with the Rev. Dr. Philip T. Wanck officiating.
The interment with military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery, Pittston.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
