Robert J. Rhoads of White Rock Terrace, Courtdale, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born April 15, 1943, in Reading, he was the son of the late John and Margaret Coley Rhoads. Moving to Wilkes-Barre, he attended local grade schools and was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School.
Bob was a U.S. Army
veteran during the Vietnam era, serving from 1962 to 1965, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as the produce manager by the former Acme warehouse located on Welles Street, Forty Fort.
Bob was a member of St. Ignatius Parish, Kingston, and belonged to to the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of Lodge 61, F&AM, the Shekinah Royal Arch, Chapter 182, the Dieu Le Veut Commandery 45 and the Mount Horeb Council 34, R&SM.
Bob belonged to Irem Temple AAONMS of Wilkes-Barre, the Shrine Club of Greater Wilkes-Barre, and was a member of the Irem Temple Oriental Band and held the office of treasurer. For many years, he provided the publicity for the annual Irem Temple Shrine Circus held at the Wilkes-Barre Armory.
Mr. Rhoads was a member of American Legion Post 558, Plains Township; Disabled American Veterans Post 59, and the North End Slovak Citizens Club, both of Wilkes-Barre.
Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Callan Rhoads; a brother, Richard and his wife, Kathy, Ellicott City, Md.; sister-in-law, Sister Mary Alicia Callan, SCC, Mendham, N.J.; his godparents, Joseph and Josephine Mamola, Wilkes-Barre; numerous cousins and friends.
The funeral for Mr. Rhoads will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday from Hugh P. Boyle & Son Funeral Home Inc., 416 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, with the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun officiating.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Pringle.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
