Susan V. (Sam) Menendez

Susan (Sam) V. Menendez, 56, of San Francisco, Calif., passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, in UCSF Medical Center after a battle with cancer. Her last days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Passaic, N.J., on April 27, 1957, she was the daughter of Christine Theresa Mock Menendez, Laflin, and the late Manuel Vincent Menendez.

She was a 1975 honors graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts from Wilkes College.

Susan was a free spirit who loved traveling and pursuing her interests in the arts. She was also an avid gardener. She spent the majority of her adult life in the Bay Area, and also lived in Spain and London, England, for nearly a year.

Prior to traveling to Europe, she worked for Pacific Gas and Electric. When she returned from abroad, she worked nights driving a cab for several taxi services in the city.

Surviving, along with her mother, is her daughter and best friend, Sara Burke Farrell, Richmond, Va.; her beloved grandchildren, Allissa and Nicholas Farrell; brothers, Tony and his wife, Karen, Laflin; Paul and his wife, Louise, Plains Township; Manny and his wife, Jane, Plains Township; Richard, Damascus, Md.; and Christopher and his wife, Alisa, Laflin; five nieces and six nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 8 in St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin. A burial service will be held on a later date at the convenience of the family.
