Theodore J. Engel of Shavertown passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, after an illness.
He was the son of the late Mathilde and Dr. Theodore B. Engel. Ted was born in Pittsburgh, but lived most of his youth in Florida. He earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Miami and also attended the Wharton School of Business. After a stint in the Army, he worked for several companies, including Sun Oil and Procter & Gamble. He began teaching at Wilkes College, now Wilkes University in the 1960s. Except for a couple years teaching at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool in England, he continued to teach at Wilkes for 47 years.
While at Wilkes, he had several administrative positions, including chairman and then dean, at the Wilkes School of Business. In later years, he was also acting chairman in the Jay Sidau School of Business. Besides teaching, he often testified as an expert witness in civil suits and was a board member of several civic and educational group.
One of Ted's most fulfilling contributions to the business school community was being one of the founding members of a National Accrediting Agency, the ACBSP.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Elaine (Dixon), with whom he spent many happy times traveling and fishing and sailing on the St. Lawrence River. He is also survived by Elaine's family, Margaret, Lewis, Janis and Janis Lynn. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the many students he has inspired over the years.
A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced. Contributions in his name may be made to the Jay Sidhu School of Business at Wilkes University or the Wilkes University Art Department.
