Thomas Walter Burkhardt, 60, of Dallas passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, following a brief illness at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, surrounded by those who loved him.
Tom was a 1971 graduate of Dallas High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He was a graduate of Penn State University
, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in history.
He was employed for more than 20 years by Plastic Arts Signs; however, he was most recently employed by the Dallas School District as a bus driver for children with special needs. His skill and love of education met every child with great love and inspiration.
In his free time, Tom enjoyed tinkering with and cruising around in his classic antique MG cars. He also enjoyed his nautical ventures on Harveys Lake in his antique boat. An avid New York Yankees fan, Tom enjoyed the company of friends and family while watching his favorite team.
After his own life, Thomas continued to share the gift of vision and love by donating his corneas to the Northeast Pennsylvania Eye Bank.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford E. Burkhardt, and mother, Dorothy Fember Burkhardt.
Surviving are his beloved son, Ryan Thomas Burkhardt, a student pharmacist at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy; brothers, Richard Burkhardt, Dallas; Dave Burkhardt, Stuart, Fla.; and Lou Burkhardt, Wyoming; sisters, Barbara Burkhardt Menzel, Shavertown; and Julie Burkhardt Dettore, Shavertown; and many nieces and nephews who loved their "Silly Uncle Tommy."
The Burkhardt family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Thomas M. Cesarini will officiate.
The family extends a special thank you to all who contributed to the excellent care and comfort of Thomas.
