Margaret S. Chesney, 95, of Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017.
Born Nov. 29, 1921, in Glen Lyon, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Palenchar) Harcharik.
A graduate of Newport High School, Class of 1939, Margaret continued her education at the former Wilkes-Barre Business College.
Prior to marrying her husband of 56 years, the late Edmund Chesney, whom she married on Jan. 30, 1954, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance in Wilkes-Barre.
Mrs. Chesney was a member of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (St. Mary's) in Berwick, where she was active in the Council of Catholic Women, served as a lector and rosary leader, and was a choir member for several years. Additionally, she was a life member of the Auxiliary of the Berwick Hospital and volunteered in the Gift Shop throughout her life.
Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, growing houseplants and garden flowers, and solving puzzles.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Michael and John Harcharik, and four sisters, Mary Harcharik, Elizabeth Pierog, Agnes Harcharik and Katherine Smeltzer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are five nephews, James Pierog, Endwell, N.Y.; J. Robert Harcharik, Beaufort, S.C.; T. Allen Harcharik, Bradenton, Fla.; Paul Harcharik, Ridgecrest, N.C.; and Mark Smeltzer, Mahtomedi, Minn. Also surviving is one niece, Margaret Smeltzer Sullivan, Seattle, Wash.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1730 Fowler Ave., Berwick, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Francis J. Tamburro, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael's Church Cemetery, Glen Lyon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Berwick, in her name.
