Douglas Ayers Obituary

Dr. Douglas Ayers, 56, of Shavertown passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Douglas Ayers grew up in Wilkes-Barre, but his heart was with the family farm, nestled in state game lands 57 in Noxen. He attended Coughlin High School and King's College locally. He attended veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania with the intention of becoming a biomedical researcher. He worked as a research assistant at the University of Texas in a program dedicated to restoring emotional/behavioral well-being to a large colony of chimpanzees.

During vet school, he worked under an AIDS research grant as a Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Following graduation from PENN, he declined a post-doctorate position at Harvard, in order to return to Northeast Pennsylvania and practice veterinary medicine. He co-founded a land conservancy that preserved more than 12,000 acres of land regionally for wildlife and green space. This organization enables landowners to conserve their property as well as teach the public the values/necessity of conservation.

Doug was co-founder of the Conservation Coalition. This is a melding of many conservation groups that focus on preserving a several hundred thousand square mile region surrounding and including the state game lands 57, 66, and 13.

Dr. Ayers was co-founder of the Republicans for Environmental Protection (Pennsylvania Chapter). This is a statewide group of conservative environmentalists that are well organized and effective in promoting progressive environmental policy in our state. His broad understanding of environmental issues led to this appointment to the Luzerne County Flood Authority.

Dr. Ayers was founder and visionary of The Lands at Hillside Farms, where he served as the chairman from its establishment until his passing. This is a 412-acre historic, sustainable living facility which has as its goal to educate people how every citizen might make sensible life choices where if enough of us practice these sustainable/sensible actions that our world would allow posterity to inherit a place with all the resources and opportunities we have now. Some of the tenets that he considered sustainable were individual responsibility such as "don't ask anybody to do for you what you can do for yourself," "All of the passengers in the boat should be required to help row." Love thy neighbor and please "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Servant leadership - instill in oneself and others a spirit of giving back." Financial responsibility - pay your bills and do not rely upon credit and live within your means." Character - this is something that one is not born with but rather is revealed via having been sculpted by life's vicissitudes." And lastly faith, the Lands at Hillside Farm was established by a group of Christians who desired to teach a walk-in life that mimicked Christ's as we feel that His walk in the Way toward a perfected trajectory individually and collectively.

In 1995, he opened Plains Animal Hospital. In 2007, he built the present environmentally green facility which houses Plains Animal Hospital and Northeast Veterinary Referral Hospital, a state of the art referral center. His excellence in veterinary service resulted in his inclusion on the State Board of Veterinary Medicine.

Doug's love of life and respect for the environment and all living things was demonstrated daily in the way he lived and causes he championed. Through his mentorship his work ethic and vision will be carried on at Plains Animal Hospital, Northeast Vet Hospital, The Lands at Hillside and many other causes. Doug truly made our world a better place. He is sadly missed by his family, many friends, loyal clients, their pets, and his own pet, cattle dog "Sweetie."

He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Ayers; father, Dr. Donald Ayers; and brother, David Ayers.

He leaves behind his fiancée and loyal caretaker, Julie Schneggenburger, New York; his sisters, Donna Schuler and her husband, Fred, Harveys Lake; Debbie DeMuro and her husband, Joe, Shavertown; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces.

The funeral service will be private at the convenience of his family in Trucksville United Methodist Church, Trucksville.

Family and friends are asked to call at Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

In memory of Doug, donations may be made to The Lands at Hillside Farms, 65 Hillside Road, Shavertown, PA 18708; Trucksville United Methodist Church, 40 Knob Hill Road, Shavertown, PA 18708; The Leukemia Society; or the National Donor Registry.

In reading some of the other tributes to Douglas I can see the influence his Father and Mother had on him. He was an old soul in a young body.

I was just a too eager freshman undergrad at UPenn, working in the surgery department at the veterinary hospital, when Doug was a senior in veterinary school. He kindly laughed when he saw me with a Reader's Digest. To me he was the curmudgeonly, folksy uncle that you would sit on a bench whittling with. Every now and again, after I too graduated from veterinary school, I'd run into him at a local conference. He always remembered me and usually had some curious bit of life-wisdom to impart. Only now, after reading of his life's work, am I amazed how profoundly he touched so many. I can only hope that all who knew him, continue to strive to be the better versions of ourselves that he saw in us.

November 21, 2017

Iwas at Plains Animinal Hospital today and heard of Dr. Ayers passing. He had been my vet for 20 years. When my chocklate lab was tortured by seizures Doug worked with him when other vets thought it be best to let him go. He lived to be 20. When I lost another pet he spent an hour with me since I was so distraught. He called me 2 days later with a dog for adoption. No one will forget Doug Ayres. He was special.

I first met Dr. Ayers when he was with Dr. Kutish. Doug opened that office on a holiday many years ago to send our cat who had cancer to the Rainbow Bridge. Opening on a holiday was unheard of. I then followed Doug to Plains Animal Hospital. In his modular office, he kept pet "medical notes" on index cards back then! Now the unsurpassed/state-of-the-art Green PAH exists. Doug ALWAYS cared for my cats, but he also cared for me, & my health problems too. Doug always asked how I was feeling & wanted to know about my lupus & systemic sarcoidosis. Doug was a brilliant veterinarian, an awesome writer, & a humanitarian/philanthropist who asked for nothing in return. My cats & I will be lost without Dr. Doug. But look at the amazing legacy Doug has left behind....The incredible Plains Animal Hospital, & the Lands at Hillside Farms. The Rainbow Bridge in Heaven has a new commander-in-chief. My cats & I will miss you, Dr. Ayers. Rest easy Doug, your hard work will be carried on, & your legacy will live on forever. Sincere sympathy to Doug's family, friends, fiancee, & to the staff at PAH.

I first met Doug when he worked with Dr Kutish. My cat Felix hated everyone there.....except for Doug. She adored him and I thought to myself, animals are a great judge of character so he must be ok! I followed Doug when he went to PAH and he took care of many of my cats. When my cat Adrienne passed away suddenly at home, Doug called me to offer his condolences and support. He truly was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Doug please keep Felix, Adrienne, Shelby, Brandy and Sydney company until I cross the bridge. Remember death is only the beginning

I first met Doug about 12 years ago taking my Shih tzus for checkups and would always enjoy discussing life with him. He always enjoyed and would laugh at my Shih tzus name- Samson Millhouse. Even when he got sick I would often exchange emails with him and he was fast to get off himself and always ask how I was doing. Amazing guy with such a huge heart. If I meet one more person in life as good as Doug I would consider myself lucky. RIP Doug

I knew Doug for more than 25 years when I first started taking my pets to PAH, from waiting on him at Cross Valley Restaurant and from Penn State where he was involved with a conservation group. He was a very kind and compassionate man. He cried with me when I had to put two of my dogs to sleep and told me "It is the best gift you can give an ailing pet". He left such an impact on every person and pet he touched. I don't know if this valley will ever see a doctor quite like Doug. RIP you will be forever missed!

Doug starting caring for my pets when he worked for Dr. Kutish. I took an instant liking to him and when he opened his small practice on River Street, I followed him like my pups life depended on his care. He was loving to every pet he touched. His passion as a vet just poured out of him. He always had the right words to say when I was in distress over my pets illness. I'd enjoy our lengthy conversations dealing with politics, the environment and how we should all work hard to better ourselves. He knew the struggles I endured to gain my life as I know it now. This man was an angel on earth, a true gentleman, a lover of life and it showed in everything he touched. He will be missed so much and I wonder if he ever realized how great he was. RIP Doug, you'll always be in my heart.

Dr Ayers used to tease me all the time. I didn't care. He was always a gentleman to my first wife (who I lost in 2002) and my current wife. He used to ask my first wife, "How do you put up with this guy?" I just laughed. Because I knew it was kidding in kindness because we were worried about the pet we brought to him. He once stayed with a cat we had to leave on Christmas Eve Day. We had to leave the area for about 12 hours for a medical reason and when we got back it was too late to pick our cat, Silver Bells, up. He called us and told us that she passed away on Christmas Eve and he didn't want her to die alone on Christmas Eve, especially with a name like that. She took a turn for the worst. He gave up a lot of his holiday to spend that time with our cat. When I lost my first wife in 2002 to a pulmonary embolism, I brought one of our pets in to see him. Dr Ayers could tell something was wrong and asked me where Mishele (my first wife) was. I broke down. He let me go a minute, came to me and asked if I was a believer. I told him, "Yes, Dr. Ayers, of course" He said, "Don't worry, you will see her again. I have never seen two more people in love." It was just what I needed to hear. It was like God had sent the words to me then. A veterinarian, a gentle man, a man who cared for animals, who cared for people. A soul who always gave of himself, and a wonderful courageous human being. An example of what the rest of us should be. We have lost a friend, Heaven is rejoicing. Our sympathies to Dr Ayers family. God bless you all.

I met Dr. Ayers only once. I was participating in a weekend event at Hillside in September, 2016 and and Dr. Ayers stopped by to chat. As a lifelong resident of Luzerne County and resident of the Bank Mountain for 34 years, I was keenly interested in the history of Hillside Farms and the non-profit that purchased it and the work they were doing to preserve it. We talked for about an hour. It was during our conversation that he mentioned his illness. Right from the start, it was evident to me of his passion for the environment, land preservation and animals. I was just fascinated in all he had to say. I quickly realized what a treasure he was and let him know how grateful I was for his vision and work. It is with deep sadness that I learned of his passing. I will be participating at the event at Hillside again this year on September 30th and October 1st and was so hoping to meet up with him again. The legacy Dr. Ayers leaves behind will touch many lives now and and in the future. It is amazing to me that I will remember him for the rest of my life with that one and only conversation I had will him a year ago. Rest in peace Dr. Ayers.

Dr. Ayers was an amazing man. He will be missed. I remember coming in for a visit with my English Setter Comet. Comet had eaten a piece of plastic. I was scared for Comet to have the surgery to remove the foreign object..I said to Dr. Ayres is she going to die...Dr. Ayres looked at me and said. "Dear, we are all going to die, but I will perform this surgery on your dog and we shall see what happens, She is in good hands." His comment to me at that time took most of my fear away and he really had a way of calming your fears....Dr. Ayres was a wonderful man and I miss the days of coming in for my pets routine visits and discussing politics with him....Prayers and Strength to the family....
