Arlene McCrossen of Dallas Township passed away peacefully Jan. 30, 2014.

A life resident of the area, she was born in Nanticoke on March 20, 1934, the second daughter and youngest child of Harry and Ethel Herbert Schmidt. Her father was a school principal and philanthropist who instilled in his daughters a caring attitude for community, as well as a love of literature and learning.

Ms. McCrossen was an x-ray technician at Nanticoke State Hospital for many years, where she had the opportunity to put her natural compassion to good use. Her final professional position was with the Red Cross in Wilkes-Barre.

Arlene's happiest years were spent in a bucolic setting in Dallas, surrounded by the beautiful countryside near the reservoir. She took great pride in her charming cottage and decorated it beautifully. She loved poetry and was a wonderful watercolorist, receiving much of her inspiration from nature. She especially loved painting flowers. Arlene also cared deeply for animals, especially dogs, and was never long without a faithful canine companion.

Ms. McCrossen is predeceased by her longtime partner, Vincent McCrossen.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and John Archer, Carefree, Ariz.; a loving niece, Valerie Wainwright, Los Gatos, Calif.; and two nephews, Max Archer from Phoenix, Ariz.; and Peter Archer from Fairfield, Conn.

A memorial reception will be held to honor and celebrate Arlene's life from 2 until 4 p.m. Thursday at the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown. All who knew her are welcome to join the family to wish Arlene fare thee well.
