Bernadine A. Kern Norkunas passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach, Fla.

Born Dec. 20, 1938, in Wilkes-Barre, Bernadine was the daughter of the late Theodore and Kathryn Lysiak.

She was a member of St. Helen's Parish, Vero Beach, Fla.

Bernadine graduated from Marymount High School in 1956. She worked at Bartel's Brewery as a secretary before marrying Leon G. Kern in 1960.

They lived in Lansdale before moving to Dallas in 1965, where together, they owned and operated Lum's Fernbrook Inn until 1989, when Lum passed away. Their son, Leon G. Kern Jr., continued to own and operate the restaurant until 2013.

In her retirement, Bernadine enjoyed reading, antiquing, puzzles, walking, movies and the warm Florida weather.

Bernadine was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt and friend. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Leon G. Kern; and her son, Leon G. Kern Jr.

Surviving are her husband of 24 years, Joesph Norkunas, Florida; brother, Matthew Lysiak, Swoyersville; daughter, Karen Kern Yarrish and her husband, Craig, Wyoming; daughter-in-law, Nancy Kern, Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Gate of Heaven Church, 40 Machell Ave., Dallas, with the Rev. Daniel Toomey officiating. 

Friends may call Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the service in the church. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Shavertown.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go to the Leon G. Kern Jr. Scholarship Fund at Keystone College, P.O. Box 50, LaPlume, PA 18411 or the
