Darlene Adonizio of Hilton Head Island, S.C., passed to her eternal rest on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.

Darlene was the daughter of Eleanor Berti Adonizio and the late Phillip Adonizio of Pittston. In addition to her mother, Darlene is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Streck. She is also survived by her brother, Phillip Adonizio, Hanover Township; brother, Robert Adonizio and wife, Sara, Clarks Summit; and sister, Mary Lou Adonizio and husband, Dennis Ames of Brookville; as well as an uncle, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Darlene graduated from Pittston Area Senior High School in 1971. She received her Bachelor of Science in psychology from Kutztown State College in 1975. She then began a 32-year career at the Hamburg State Center and Allentown State Hospital as a recreation therapist. She was dedicated to the care and well-being of mentally-challenged adults.

Darlene's compassion for others had no boundaries. She was devoted to the care of stray animals and adopted numerous loving pets, which she considered "her children" over the years. She continued her philanthropic work until the very end by doing volunteer work for many charities but was especially devoted to numerous feral cat programs, the Hospice of the Low Country and Meals-On-Wheels, where she volunteered to work in the poorest communities in her area.

Darlene and Tom moved to Hilton Head Island in 2011 to begin her retirement in their beautiful home by the sea, which she loved. She thoroughly enjoyed evenings watching the tide come and go with the moon rising, the marshes of the low country, and the many varieties of colorful flowers existing in the south.

In her last days, she comforted her husband by assuring him she had no regrets about her life and that she received everything she had wanted and more. As she always said, "The more you give, the more you receive in return." That is how she led her life.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William St., Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William St., Pittston. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, it is Darlene's wish that donations be made to the Hilton Head Humane Association, 10 Humane Way, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29926. Online condolences may be made at www.peterjadoniziofuneralhome.com.
