Dorothy Mae Evans, 86, formerly of Andover Street in Wilkes-Barre, went to be with her Lord and savior, Jesus, on Thursday, March 8, 2018, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 18, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Robert R. and Minnie Davis Maharty. She attended E.L. Meyers High School.

Dorothy was employed by the Wilkes-Barre Kmart in the ladieswear department and cash office.

Dorothy was presently a member of the Nebo Baptist Church, Nanticoke. Throughout her lifetime, she had served as Sunday school teacher, deaconess and church treasurer.

She was also active in Daughters of America, Rainbow Seniors and Lucky Pal Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Wassil Evans, in 2016; brothers, Robert Maharty and William Maharty; and sisters, Mildred Eckenrode and Eleanor Scott.

Surviving are her children, Luanne Evans, Nanticoke; Doreen Nobel and her husband, Gary, Sugarloaf; Denise Evans, Sugarloaf; and David W. Evans, Gordon; brother, Donald Maharty and his wife, Lois, Williamsburg, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Timothy G. Hall officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The family would like to thank Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center staff for all the love and care shown to their parents.
