Eleanor J. Thorne, 85, of Shickshinny, passed away peacefully Sunday Sept. 9, 2018, at Bonham Nursing & Rehab Center, Stillwater.

Born in Huntington Mills, she was a daughter of the late John Yale Johnson and Esther (Bilby) Johnson. She was a graduate of Shickshinny High School.

Eleanor was married to the late DeLong Thorne for 40 years. Together they raised a family of five children. In addition to being a homemaker, Eleanor worked at Amil Manufacturing, several area restaurants, Boyer's Supermarket, and Ridall Bus Lines.

She was an avid quilter in her younger years and enjoyed playing pinochle, cooking, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

Eleanor was a longtime member of the McKendree United Methodist Church where she was pianist and active in the church choir. She was an active volunteer at the Patterson Grove Campground, was a member of the Grange Association of Pennsylvania and the Women's Christian Temperance Union of Pennsylvania. She volunteered with the Shickshinny Food Bank for many years.

In addition to her parents and husband, Eleanor was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Johnson, John Y. Johnson Jr., Arthur Johnson, Floyd Johnson, Larry Johnson and sisters; Miriam Johnson, Louise Laubach and Hilda Rhinard.

She is survived by her loving children, Susan (Gary) McCutcheon, West Nanticoke; Michael (Linda) Thorne, Shickshinny; Catherine Thorne, Wilkes-Barre; Thomas (Cindy) Thorne, Sugarloaf; and Linda (Robert) Osborne, Pen Argyl; brother, Kenneth Johnson; and sisters, Betty Good, Ruth Wandell, Cora Trumpore, and Barbara Saxe. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Per her request, Eleanor chose to make an anatomical gift of her body for medical research.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Town Hill United Methodist Church, 417 Town Hill Road, Shickshinny. All are welcome to a fellowship luncheon immediately following the service in the church social hall.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bonham Nursing & Rehab Center for the care and compassion shown to Eleanor over the past six years.
