Elizabeth A. "Betty" Dunay, 82, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, surrounded by her loving family in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

A woman of strong, Catholic faith, she was a member of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Church, Wilkes-Barre.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, on July 8, 1935, the daughter of the late Leroy and Sophie Trudnak Thomas. She was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 1953. She was also a graduate of the Wilkes-Barre Business School, Class of 1959.

For Betty, her family was her world. She was the most giving and caring woman to those she knew and even to those she didn't know. Primarily a homemaker, Betty also assisted her husband in their business, Dunay Jewelers, Wilkes-Barre. For several years she was employed by Pomeroy's Department Store, Wilkes-Barre and later on she opened a packing and shipping business adjacent to the jewelry store.

Until her illness progressed earlier this year, she hosted Sunday family dinners to gather her family together for love and food. Known lovingly to many as "Aunt Bet," she will be remembered for her famous lasagna, her hugs and love and prayers for all who knew her.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, John Dunay, on March 7, 1996; brothers, Lefty and Lenny Thomas; and sisters, Martha Zarenski and Peggy Puchalski.

She is survived and will be deeply missed by her children, Susan (Tom) Shortz, John (Debbie) Dunay, Lisa (Charles) Litchkowski and Lynn (Damian) Matysczak; five grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Jessica Meyers, Josh and Kyle Dunay and Allison and Adam Litchkowski; sister, Midge Domanski; and brother, Robert Thomas. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive who often referred to her as a "second mom" and also many dear friends whose love and support were also her treasure.

The family would like to thank Dr. Criner and the staff of Temple Lung and the outstanding staff of the ICU at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for the love and exceptional care they provided to our mom in her final weeks, to Dr. Martino (who she adoringly referred to as "Boss") and also to the many, many years of care and support of Dr. Cynthia Solomon and her staff.
