Gertrude Grebeck Alexis, 83, of Port Griffith passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Commonwealth Hospice in Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 3, 1930, in Port Griffith, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Grebeck. Gertie graduated from Jenkins Township High School in 1948. She lived in Port Griffith all her life.

Gertie worked as a wrapper stretcher at cigar factories in the Wyoming Valley and retired shortly after they left the area. She also ran the kitchen and waitressed for the Jenkins Township American Legion in the 1970s and 1980s.

She was an active member of St. Joseph's Church, singing in the choir, cooking for church bazaars and making pierogies to help benefit the church.

She was most known for her quick wit, sense of humor and generous nature. She loved gardening, watching things grow and feeding the birds.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley R. Freeda; second husband, William Alexis; and brother, Edward Grebeck.

Surviving are her son, Stanley J. Freeda, Farmington, N.H.; sisters, Cecelia Pietras, New Jersey; and Evelyn Makaravitz, Florida; brothers, Bernard Greback, Delaware; and Joseph Grebeck, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews. All her nieces and nephews loved their Auntie Gertie.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday from Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston.

Interment will be held in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Farmington Community Gardens, 569 Main St., Farmington, NH 03835.
