Gertrude M. Lucent, 90, a former Duryea resident, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Wesley Village, Jenkins Township, where she had been a guest for the past several months.

Mrs. Lucent was born in Pittston, daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Corsino DeForte, and was a graduate of the Class of 1941, Pittston High School.

She worked for a time at Main Pants Factory and, later, she and her friend, Mary Saitta, were welders at a machine shop in West Pittston, where they made parts for the Piper Cub, the "Flying Coffins" of World War II. Following her war service, Gertrude continued to work in the garment industry, retiring from Hy-Grade Pants, Taylor, in 1988.

She had been a member of the former St. James Episcopal Church, Pittston, and, following merger, of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Her husband of almost 65 years, Del E. Lucent, a decorated Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Sarah Falzone, Ann Tonkin and Angela Lucent.

Surviving are a son, Michael Lucent and his wife, Donna, Dundee, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Renie Lucent, Pittston; grandson, Del M. Lucent and his wife, Holly; granddaughter, Selena Lucent-George and her husband, Francis George, and great-grandson, Adrian Lucent George; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday from H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 211 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, with Burial Office and Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Timothy Alleman, rector, will officiate and interment will be in Pittston Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, with a Vigil service at 4 p.m.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations in Mrs. Lucent's name be made to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 373 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702, or to a .
